CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) is the computer solution of a number of equations to predict fluid motion: a computational technology that enables you to study the dynamics of things that flow.
In 2001 we began with very accurate simulations of 3D air stream around a paraglider wing. At that time Peter Mack (a CFD specialist) joined our team. As the first step we managed to get the 3D shape of a wing into the CFD environment. Then Peter built the 3D volume mesh around the wing in hours of handwork. The calculation needed days, but the results impressed all of us (not only the very beautiful color pics).
These days all these steps are done automatically and we simulated lots of different airfoils, wing shapes, sail tensions and cell inside air streams over the last month. So the computer is giving us a very detailed and accurate forecast of the performance of a new wing in the design phase and lots more of useful data.
This new, very powerful but expensive instrument is enabling the NOVA development team to once again being a step ahead. The following pictures are the result of the air stream simulation around a 3D model of the MAMBOO.
